Fame is like the wind. It blows comfort to us and sometimes it's the other way round: discomfort.
The question is: how do you handle fame?
Before we get to that, what is FAME?
According to the Merriam Webstar Dictionary, fame is an overall quality or character as seen or judged by people in general. Fame is an image formed from popularity.
Fame comes with a lot of things like power, money and even character reveal. It could be a stepping stone and sometimes a crashing point for others.
Back to our question, how do you handle fame?
Handling fame is not as a difficult task as it seems. It largely depends on one's personality and a definition of what one strives to represent.
Here are few thoughts on efficiently handling fame:
1) GET TO KNOW YOURSELF
You must understand yourself; your emotional and mental capabilities.
It is very important to know yourself and have a mind of your own because you will be in the faces of a lot of people when you are famous and it is hard to sustain fame if you do not properly align with your values.
2) KEEP AN EYE ON YOURSELF
Keep track of your routines, habits and activities that push you towards your goals. This might include having an accountability partner.
Fame often comes with a lot of media attention. Do not lose focus because of that and assume you have arrived.
3) LEARN TO TAKE CRITICISM WITHOUT BREAKING STRIDE
Criticism is one of the most difficult aspects of being famous.
In fact, the fear of criticism has kept a lot of creators from expressing their art in its true form and have settled for what everyone likes (which is usually average)
A famous creator will definitely have people of different opinions about their work. This is why it is important to seive through criticism, pick the constructive ones and discard the hateful ones.
4) IDENTIFY YOUR LIMITS
This is where you know your strengths, weaknesses, triggers etc. You learn to set boundaries between your personal and professional lifestyle. This includes saying no.
5) BUILD INTEGRITY
Let your word be your bond. Always deliver beyond expectations.
You must be consistent in your message. Being a leader is your obligation.
6) EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
Always be prepared for the worst but expect the best.
Fame can come with unexpected twists and sudden events might want to knock you off your feet but being able to bounce back from issues quickly is a reputation-saving skill.
7) ASK FOR HELP
There is nothing wrong with seeking assistance.
As the responsibilities that come with popularity grow, you may experience a sense of strain. Seek help from individuals that you respect in your field or from people who are willing to be of help.
Fame is powerful.
With fame, you are held to higher standards and flaws are magnified. It is essential that you build sufficient depth and range during your 'lowkey' days in order to carry through when fame comes.
